Just finished Ringside. Jen Bryant's poetry/prose allows the cast of characters to unfold and grow on the reader throughout the novel. The book's light and deft touch of humor just warms the characters more. The subject matter of the Scopes trial seems particularly relevant in an age when "intelligent design" is debated in the news and when faith on many levels is essential to solving the problems of the day. The book never condescends--it just grows, like its characters. Fun and thoughtful at the same time.
Prior to Ringside, I read Pieces of Georgia with my 12-year old daughter. A great protagonist that resonated with both of us. Georgia is a strong character who grows stronger throughout the novel, with a voice that rings true. Watching her grow more confident as she overcomes adversity, she helps and loves those around her with candor and humor. The blend of the Wyeth's paintings and Bryant's poetry is a pleasure. Pages fly by. Would heartily recommend to readers of any age, and would love to see this on the curriculum of language arts classes everywhere.
