Pieces of Georgia is a beautifully written book that has a universal theme that all children can relate to. Georgia is a character they can laugh with, cry with, relate to, and cheer on. It is also based on local history and local artists which motivates readers. I teach seniors and read aloud this book every year. My students can not wait to finish it each time.
I also have the unique experience of having Jennifer Bryant visit my students about the writing process and answer questions they have about the book. She is warm, friendly, and approachable. It is one of those "teaching moments" that makes me smile. They will remember Jennifer Bryant, they will remember Georgia, and they will remember that their own writing is worth the time to pursue. I couldn't imagine a semester without it.
