The novel, "Pieces of Georgia" appeals to middle school students on many different levels. Its journal-entry format allows the main character, Georgia to voice her personal feelings and gives readers the "inside scoop" to the approach and process in which Georgia attempts to work out her life issues. The voice of Georgia is believable and the issues she deals with have common ground with many young adults--the feelings of loss or separation in the family setting, how to fit in with friends and relate to teachers in the school setting, and the all-important issue of peer pressure.
The novel also offers a glimpse into the world of imagination--not only in the way Georgia is able to describe her feelings in words but also the discovery she makes into the creative world of art through her exposure to the Wyeth family painters during her visits to the Brandywine River Museum. Georgia discovers her creative self through her exploration of the museum's paintings. Georgia's insightful observations of the paintings she seeks out in the museum, and the successful results in her own art as a result of her museum visits confirm to readers that she is an intelligent girl and artist who is capable of more than she knows.
The book is beautifully written and has a wonderful, quiet approach to the voices of its characters. |
